Distinctiveness

Use the MCA21 portal's 'Check Company Name' tool for a basic search. Availability on the portal is not a clearance — the Registrar applies Rule 8 criteria separately. A practising CS assesses both availability and approval likelihood before any filing.
RUN (Reserve Unique Name) is an MCA form to reserve a company name for 20 days before SPICe+ incorporation. You can propose up to two names per application; the Registrar considers them in order of preference.
A name reserved via RUN is valid for 20 days from the date of approval. If incorporation is not filed within that window, the name lapses and you must apply for a fresh reservation.
Common reasons: similarity to an existing company (exact or phonetic), use of restricted words without prior approval, trademark conflicts, names that do not match the proposed objects, and purely generic or descriptive names.
